Responsible Waste Management Garbage and Rubbish Removal, Chester

Globally, governments spend billions on responsible garbage and waste removal management programs to try preventing waste from damaging the environment. The principle of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” has been developed to minimize and recycle waste products. While the aim is to get to zero level of waste, it will take plenty of effort to convince citizens in the UK to commit themselves to living less wastefully to achieve this ambitious goal.

The concept of recycling does a lot to help keep waste from ending up in landfills. But recycling goes further than that. The establishment of a Materials Recovery Facility or Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) helps contribute to lowering the waste levels by collecting recyclable material and processing it into reusable form for manufacturers to convert into new recycled products. MRF’s do a valuable job in helping to reduce the pressure on having to use new sources (e.g. timber) and helps reduce the considerable pollution that occurs at paper pulping factories.

Recycle to Conserve

This means that by recycling items like plastic, aluminium, glass, and paper, less new raw material is required in the manufacture of goods. It also helps with energy savings, resulting in fewer emissions and less water being used when your waste is recycled and converted into reusable form.

Recycle to Save Energy

  • Recycling one aluminum can, can save energy enough to listen to a full album on your phone. Recycling 100 cans can save energy to light your bedroom for about two weeks. (Source: Go Ever Green)
  • Glass never wears out as it takes 4,000 years to break down in a landfill. Luckily, all glass is recyclable to the extent that most bottles and jars are already made with at least 25% recycled glass content. The energy saved by recycling 1 glass bottle can power a 100-watt lightbulb for 4 hours. (Source: Conserve Energy Future)
  • Recycling paper saves trees and water. Every paper ton produced using materials non-recycled, uses 7000 gallons of water. (Source: Recycling Bin) The average UK family throws away 6 trees worth of paper into their household bin each year.
  • It takes up to 500 years for plastic items in landfills to decompose. Recycling one ton of plastic waste saves about 2,000 pounds of oil; the amount of water that one person uses in two months; and 2 peoples’ energy consumption for one year! (Source: thebalancesmb.com)
  • Plastic bags in our oceans are the second most common kind of waste item found in coastal cleanups (the most common are cigarette butts). By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. (Source: thebalancesmb.com)

The trend to reducing, recycling, and reusing is gaining traction worldwide. In the UK, the recycling rate for household waste was 45.7% in 2017 which was a small increase on the previous year. (Source: https://www.recyclingbins.co.uk/)

Then to complicate matters, the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a health crisis across the world. Because of the rapid way the virus spreads from person to person in close contact, we have had to change our social patterns, affecting the way we work and live.

The environment has benefitted from the restriction of people moving around the world, as national borders were closed, flights cancelled, and lockdowns were put in place. This has resulted in fewer CO2 emissions, and general regeneration of oceans and natural areas. However, most of the focus is on the virus, with environmental concerns not being extensively reported.

Changes have taken place in our societies with interaction between people having been curtailed or stopped completely. It has changed the way we shop, go to restaurants, and attend social gatherings as this human interaction is the way the virus spreads.

More Disposable Items mean More Waste

Much new research has gone into this virus to help understand how it's transmitted, its presence, and life span on all kinds of surfaces.

  • The indication is that it can stay infectious on a surface from 24 hours to up to 5 days. Many supermarkets have changed packing procedures preferring single use plastic bags over reusable ones, and roller belts for movement of groceries. Reusable bags are thought to be a means to carry the virus, which has resulted in a drop in the number used.
  • Most restaurants have been closed for sit-down meals, and have only been allowed to serve take outs. This has led to a rise in disposal containers, all of which must be thrown away and will lead to a large increase in waste generation for some while to come. The rationale behind this is that reuse containers, such as crockery, and eating utensils, could impose the danger of workers and customers becoming infected.
  • There has been a rapid rise in the amount of home waste because of most people having to work under restrictive conditions at home. Some estimates indicate that the increase in home waste generation is as high as 50% with more residential junk removal needed. We as a registered waste remover are on standby to haul away your waste. This applies to any type of waste materials that you need collected.
